Go visit Two Writing Teachers Ruth and Stacey and share a slice one word at a time.
I am owning my word, Pace. My one little word (OLW) of 2013. I see its importance and purpose in so many places now. I notice I am doing things that require pacing myself with more motivation.
- I started knitting a scarf about two or more weeks ago. I have about a third of it complete. I do a little or a lot each night. I am not concerned about the nights I only complete one row because I am one row closer to wearing it on these cold Michigan days.
- I started running again. This is something I have started and stopped frequently in my lifetime. Wanting to BE a runner turns into too much pressure. So instead I am just trying to pace myself and run...be ME instead.
- I wanted to set a reading goal for 2013, but I have never done that before. I wasn't sure where to start. Then I decided instead of setting a goal I would keep track of my reading instead. How many new picture books, professional books, novels, journal articles, poetry, etc. can I read in one year? I figure by keeping track I will inevitably be driven to reach certain numbers as I see them approaching. Then, maybe in 2014 I will be better prepared to set a goal.
Pace isn't just about slowing down
it is about recognizing when to slow down
when to speed up
when to be quiet
when to speak up
when to reflect
and when to let go
it is about everything around me
I want to notice the pace of life.

Excellent word choice! I love that instead of setting a specific goal you are making a list. I think you are right...seeing certain numbers approaching will encourage you more than trying to hit a certain number...at least this year as you are thinking about your amount of reading. Your words at the end can be applied to so many scenarios, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteYour first sentence is so powerful. You have demonstrated that ownership of your word. I need to do the same.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, is it too late for me to start a reading log? Or maybe a log of the books we read in the classroom...great ideas! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am with Elsie; your first line is powerful! But so is your last line! Noticing the pace of life...if I remember right, you wrote a post some time ago about stopping and enjoying the moment. I think you are already on the way of pacing your life!
ReplyDeleteI am constantly reminding myself to pace myself. It's hard work. I think being more attune to your own pacing will be eye opening. It's a fantastic word to live by.
ReplyDeleteBTW: I'm learning how to knit next week! I've always wanted to learn and am finally going to do it.
I love the poem & the ending when you say you wanted to "notice the pace of life". Looks like you're on your way!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great word and you've described so many facets of it.
