Squirrels and Loons!

At the end of the week I will be getting together with some family to visit a cabin on the lake. I treasure this time of the summer when we go visit the loons that live on this small lake in Northern Michigan. There is pure comfort and enchantment in hearing a loon call or wail as the sun rests for the day. I found this book intriguing and informative as it tells the tale of two hatchling's journey into adulthood. The illustrations are beautiful and feature other lake dwelling creatures. Its poetic text is equally lovely. Here is a small taste:

On black-and-white checkered backs
they snuggle down to dry.
Sailing the lake on their loon boats
they watch the water world go by.

Another favorite read this past weekend was Mario Makes a Move by Jill McElmurry. A very cute story of a squirrel who has some "amazing moves." When I saw this book and flipped through the pages I loved the illustrations. They show a lot of movement lines and sequenced movement of the characters. The vocabulary is also something to celebrate with words like artistic, astonishing and elegant. I see this being a great addition to my mentor text pile.

Chalk-A-Bration is tomorrow when we can get our chalketry on (that is chalk and poetry smooshed into one word)! Join in tomorrow or the next day and grab the chalk-a-bration button on the right side of the screen.

Two nice looking books, Betsy. Those books about place, especially where we are going are nice. Stacey has one about Maine that she's sharing. See you tomorrow! Thank you!

Your Loon book brought back memories of my own childhood memories of a Loon Lake near my grandparents home. :) Just added the squirrel book to my TBR--too cute!

Have a great reading week!
